I always thought pure black and white landscapes looked flat until this tutorial showed me how to keep that soft color tone in the shadows. The masking technique for bringing back subtle warmth is explained really clearly, and my last few edits finally have that moody look I was after.

The step where you bring back just a hint of color on the foliage is what sold me. I ran an old mountain shot through it and the greens came back so softly it looks like a real film print. Took me about twenty minutes to follow along, and I'm no Photoshop wizard.
